HENRY MOORE

 

Born 1898, Castleford, Yorkshire, England.
Died 1986, Much Hadham, East Hertfordshire, England.

 

After World War I Moore received an ex-serviceman's grant to continue his education at the Leeds School of Art. After graduating, he taught at the Royal College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art until the start of World War II. During the war, he was commisioned as a war artist, producing powerful drawings of Londoners sleeping in the London Underground while sheltering from the blitz.

 

At his home is Much Hadham, Moore built a collection of natural objects: skulls, driftwood, rocks, and shells. These objects would become inspiration for his later work. He started printmaking in 1931, and in 1958 met the master lithographer Stanley Jones at the Cerwen Press with whom he continued to make prints for the rest of his life.

 

In 1972, Moore established the Henry Moore Foundation to promote art education and support of young artists. His art is in collections around the world, including the Tate Museum, Leeds, MoMA, New York, and the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
