If you happen to be heading up to Napa for harvest season this fall, Richard Phillips Best Picture brings together the artists’ complete 2024 Nominees series for the first time in the U.S. with twelve portraits of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Greta Lee, Jacob Elordi and others. Beyond the obvious Hollywood connection, this marks Phillips’ return to celebrity portraiture, nearly 15 years after Most Wanted. For these works, he deliberately selected publicity images that felt quieter and less rehearsed than the traditional red-carpet photograph, which opens up a nice conversation around how celebrity image-making has changed between the paparazzi era and today’s social-media-controlled public persona.
