The Last Party: Nightworld in Photographs

The exhibition presents striking images in one particular aspect of nightworld: the world of those who play by night and of those who work in the service of pleasure. Encompassing a century of nightworld, THE LAST PARTY features timeless scenes from such chroniclers of nights long past as Brassai, Diane Arbus, and Lisette Model, today's top photographers, including Helmut Newton and Irving Penn, as well as current paparazzi (the most ubiquitious presences in nightworld of all). THE LAST PARTY exhibition coincides with the Twentieth Anniversary on April 26th of the very prototype of nightworld itself, Studio 54 as well as with the publication of Anthony Haden-Guest's book on New York's nightworld, also called THE LAST PARTY (William Morrow).

The exhibition THE LAST PARTY, organized by Independent Curator Helen Varola, is significant for being the first to document club life from the 30's through the 50's, to the days of Studio 54 and such clubs as the Mudd Club, Club 57 and the Palladium, to the present raves by Club Kids. Videos shown as art in clubs, as well as videos of club scenes, make up the video installment in THE LAST PARTY. The video portion of the exhibition was edited and designed by artist/filmmaker Michael Thomas Holman, who wrote the screenplay for Julian Schnabel's film "Basquiat."
